Most thrift store furniture makeovers rely on white, black, sage green or natural wood finishes. This $19 Goodwill sideboard takes a different direction. Instead of trying to hide its traditional shape, the Instagram creator @shellychicboutique Embrace it with a high-gloss hot pink finish that transforms one of the store’s most dated pieces into the focal point of an entire room.

This project follows a different path than a previous makeover where she stripped down a thrifted dresser to reveal the natural wood grain underneath. In that transformation, wood became the feature. This time, color became the feature.
A $19 Goodwill find offers plenty of potential

The original sideboard featured dark wood tones, decorative door panels, ornate hardware and a traditional profile.
Many shoppers may have passed it up in favor of something with cleaner lines. Shelly noticed something different. Robust construction, balanced proportions and a three-door layout provide a solid foundation for a complete transformation.
Sanding removes the glossy surface

Before the paint could be applied, the existing finish needed to be prepared.
A quick scuff sanding dulls the glossy surface and creates better adhesion for the primer. The goal was not to cut the entire piece into bare wood but to create a surface ready for its new finish.
The sanding stage also softens some of the visual heaviness created by the dark spots.
The primer changed the look almost immediately

Once the primer covered the sideboard, it was easy to visualize the conversion.
The dark brown finish disappeared beneath a clean, neutral surface that highlighted the shape of the cabinet rather than its color. Details that had previously blended into the stain became more noticeable.
The primer also provided an even base for the bold color that followed.
Bright pink replaced the traditional wood finish

The biggest surprise came with the paint.
Instead of choosing a muted color, Shelley covered the sideboard in a vivid hot pink finish. Applied with a paint sprayer, the color trims large flat surfaces, recessed panels and details with consistent coverage.
Bright finishes completely changed how furniture was perceived. What looked traditional and dated in dark wood suddenly felt playful, modern and impossible to ignore.
New hardware elevated the finished piece

The original hardware disappeared during the makeover.
In its place, geometric gold bridges contrast against the pink finish. The updated hardware reinforces the project’s more current direction while adding another layer of visual interest.
The combination of bright pink and gold transformed the sideboard from a thrift-store purchase into a statement furniture piece.
Color became the focal point

Unlike previous dresser makeovers, where exposed wood grain became the highlight, this project relies entirely on color.
Sideboards now anchor the room beneath oversized artwork, framed prints and pink wall molding. Instead of blending into the background, it draws attention from the entire space.

The makeover shows that not every thrift store needs natural wood or neutral paint. Sometimes the strongest transformation comes from choosing a color that most people never consider.
Would you have painted this sideboard a darker pink, or would you have preferred a more neutral finish?
