We were keen to establish a homey feel as quickly as possible and in pursuit of this, we sanded and painted, scrubbed, drilled and polished the whole house, using our budget for quick fixes and new furniture. The grout between the red-tiled countertops is so fine that no matter how hard we scrub, I don’t think it will ever come clean, and the lack of cabinetry means it looks messy, no matter how tidy it really is.
