Fashion and textile designer Pearl Lowe and her husband Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey have recently returned to city life in London. The couple’s pied-à-terre is a two-bedroom flat in the heart of Notting Hill and perfectly encapsulates Pearl’s unique style.
Author of the Faded Glamor series of interior books, Pearl is well-placed to design this attractive flat that is packed with original features. After designing her Vintage kitchen Full of treasures and understatement, next on the list was the bathroom and Pearl teamed up with the iconic bathroom company. BC Designs To help transform this key space into vintage glamour.
Art Deco influence

Previously, the bathroom was a ‘functional shower room’ which was dark.
‘I’ve always been obsessed with 1920s Paris – the glamor and the sense of romance. I wanted the bathroom to feel like a forgotten corner of the Left Bank: decadent, slightly cinematic and full of atmosphere rather than perfection,’ says Pearl.
Pearl chose Burt & May’s Metro Skinny Tiles Little Green Rolling Fog And Iris Which was used vertically.
There were some problems early on due to pipes that couldn’t be turned on, Pearl explains, ‘The pipework was running straight across the floor, which completely dictated the layout. Instead of hiding the problem, we turned it into a design feature, made subtle steps to hide it, and Burt & May. Hampton Large Hexagonal White Marble Tiles which gave the solution real beauty.’

‘Without question, the most transformative aspect of the makeover was the bath,’ says Pearl.
However, there was some debate as to whether the bath chosen by Pearl would work in the space. ‘The BC designs a freestanding senator bath with legs Considered too big, too heavy and too impractical by our builders, but I was determined. Now it’s a statement piece in the room, completely grounding the space. It has changed everything.’
Let in the light

‘The bathroom was dark, so we added a star-etched glass piece. It catches the light in a very unexpected, subtle and almost dreamlike way,’ says Pearl. Recreate this look without investing in new glass by checking out Pearlfrost’s sunburst patterned window film.
To enhance this faded glamor Art Deco feel, Pearl uses windowsills for additional decoration, ‘I put all my vintage perfume bottles down there, and it looks lovely.’
Vintage details

Pearl wanted to create a vintage look with contemporary elements such as ‘striped’ tiled walls. A classic looking towel radiator, basin taps and shower in brass add warmth to the scheme and soften the overall look giving it a more inviting feel.

Finds antiques

‘My favorite part of the bathroom is the little vintage shelf I salvaged from our beach house. It’s full of trinkets, objects and little pieces that I’ve collected over the years, which I keep adding to. I often lie in the bath watching him.’

Pearl likes to spend time at vintage fairs and antique markets looking for unique finds to create her iconic romantic style in her home.
‘This makeover has completely changed how I use the bathroom now, it’s gone from being a fully functional shower room to a space where you want to be. The deVOL marble-top sink and senator bath bring a sense of elegance and luxury. Now it looks like a room for lingering, not rushing.’
