There are various considerations when choosing or designing your stair runner, including the type of edging you want. Alternatives include whipping (such as over-stitch), which provides a small piping under the edge of the runner. You can also choose to fold the edge down (if the material allows) which gives a neat, endless edge with no border. Tying your runner with tape creates a traditional English look, with a wide cotton border that can either contrast or compliment the runner. You can also explore having a plain runner with patterned taping. There are so many options, you just need inspiration.
Alternatively, you may choose to consider a full coverage look with a stair carpet.
