How we added some serious drama to our dining room decor by installing DIY landscape wallpaper.
Big change in the dining room!
Last fall, I finally took the leap and made some dramatic decorative changes to our dining room space. Having installed wallpaper with two murals in the past, I thought wallpaper with murals was just the dose of energy and drama this room needed to bring it back to life. You can see them wallpaper murals here and here I ordered a painted abstract landscape design Photo wall. It turned out to be just what this dismal eatery needed to come back to life. I couldn’t be happier that I took the plunge!
Decorating our new building over time:
If you’ve been following along for the past few years, you know that our current house was built for us by a local builder. We have lived here for about two years. Costs started to rise as we built through the first part of COVID. Because of this, we decided to cut back where we could and did quite a bit of finishing work ourselves. Painting was one area we felt capable of doing it ourselves, so we set about painting almost all the walls in our new 2,500 square foot home. To keep things simple, and because we wanted to move in as soon as possible, we painted most of it white (Chantilly lace to be exact). We figured we could work our way through the rooms, decorating and updating the paint as we felt moved.
The white painted walls looked gloomy and lifeless…
For some parts of our house, white walls worked well. But there are some darker spots in our home that felt just wrong in the pure true white that is Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace. The dining room was one of those places. No matter what time of day or how much natural sunlight came in through our back doors and windows, the dining room always felt dark and shadowy. The otherwise beautiful, crisp white paint color felt dull and lifeless here. Every time I looked out into our dining room from the kitchen, I felt an inner shudder. I just hated it!
Here’s what it looked like before this DIY wallpaper wallpaper included a wall. I also made a few other changes (with the vintage hut I painted). We also reoriented the table and I like it much better the new way.
My third DIY photo wallpaper!
As I mentioned, this is my third time wallpapering from Photowall. After experience with them, I really recommend their products. I prefer to order premium quality and apply the adhesive directly to the wall to mount it. I shared mine Do-it-yourself tips for wallpapering in this article last spring:
Transforming the Dining Room with Mural Wallpaper:
It’s always so much fun to watch the transformation! Seeing it go up is quite a dramatic experience, and it’s exciting to go back at the end and take it all in for the first time as a whole.
Big difference, right?
And doesn’t this space look 1000 times better than it did before I added this dramatic mural? Honestly, I couldn’t be happier. I feel like this really kicks off the color scheme I wanted to carry into our fabulous dining/living/kitchen area.
We also made a few changes and updates to our living room this winter. I’ll be back soon to share them with you! Can you spot anything different in this picture?
