Want a fire pit area that looks permanent instead of temporary patio furniture placed on gravel? Most backyard seating setups rely on plastic chairs or expensive outdoor sectionals that still leave the space incomplete.
Hence this DIY project from a TikTok creator @teee.gvbe started spreading. Instead of buying an outdoor bench, they used stacked cinder blocks and pressure treated wood to create long built-in seats around the fire pit using simple materials from the hardware store.
The biggest surprise is how architectural the benches began to look when the wooden beams slipped through the blocks. What started as stacked masonry quickly turned the backyard into something that looked closer to a custom outdoor lounge.
Cinder blocks replaced traditional bench frames
The entire structure was laid upright with stacked cinder blocks Gravel patio.
Instead of creating a complex wooden framing, the holes inside the blocks became the support system for the bench itself. Long pressure-treated beams slide through hollow centers, locking the seating layout together without visible brackets or metal hardware.
The gray concrete also added contrast against the pale gravel and white fence, making the seating area visually more grounded.
The gravel helped make the entire space more finished
Before the benches even went together, the gravel patio had already changed how the backyard functioned.
The light-colored stone created separation from the surrounding grass while making the fire pit area feel more intentional than an open lawn space. Dark border pavers around the perimeter also frame the patio and prevent the gravel from visually spilling into the yard.
Once the benches were added, the gravel began to act more like a flooring than a landscaping material.
Wood beams changed the whole look
The biggest change occurred when the pressure-treated lumber slipped through the blocks.
Without wood, the setup resembled stacked masonry. After the beams were installed, the structure immediately began to read as built-in seating.
Long horizontal lines also visually stretch the seating area across the patio while warming the cold concrete texture from the cinder blocks.
Because the wood was left exposed rather than completely boxed in, the bench kept a raw outdoor look that matched fire pit setups better than polished patio furniture.
Corner seating makes the patio feel larger

Instead of floating chairs around the fire pit, the built-in corner layout began to form an enclosure around the space. The patio immediately felt like an outdoor room rather than an empty backyard corner.
The corner seat also introduced depth variation as upright cinder blocks doubled as back supports next to horizontal wooden beams.
The material made the project feel more custom than expected
Cinder blocks usually look industrial or unfinished, but the combination of gravel, stacked stone edging, wood beams and a fire pit softened the overall look.
The repeated rectangular shapes from the blocks also helped the benches feel more structured and architectural rather than makeshift DIY furniture.
Once the seating wrapped around the fire pit, even the simple plastic chairs began to seem less important as the bench became the focal point of the patio.
Why did this backyard setup start spreading?
Most outdoor seating projects require either expensive sectional or complex woodwork.
This setup avoids both.
Cinder blocks formed the structure, lumber formed the seating, and the gravel patio visually tied everything together. The project also seems modular enough to expand later with planters, lighting poles, cushions or stains.
And because the benches sit low and wide around the fire pit, the entire backyard seems designed around gathering rather than scattered furniture placement.
