DIY Patchwork Folded Coaster (Sewing Tutorial)


Make the cutest fabric folded coasters with this simple and easy sewing tutorial. I’ve put together a complete sewing guide that will show you how to sew them with fabric squares.

I have previously sewn these pads with a different design and they turned out just as well. This time we will sew them in a cross/triangle shape and they are so easy to put together.

This sewing project should take you 5-10 minutes or less to complete.

This is a quick sewing project; however, by the time you finish your first patchwork folded coaster, you’ll want to make tons of them.

Consumables

  • Patterned Cotton Fabric – 10cm x 10cm / 3.94″ x 3.94″ (5 pieces)
  • Fusible Interface – 10 cm x 10 cm / 3.94″ x 3.94″ (1 pc)
  • Sewing machine
  • Pins
  • scissors

Instructions

step 01. Start by pressing the outer patterned fabric onto the fusible surface, then cut the binding to match the size of the canvas.

step 02 – 03. Put that piece aside for now.

step 04. Take your second square of fabric.

step 05. Turn the fabric to the wrong side and fold it into a triangle as shown above. Now the patterned side should be facing up.

step 06. Repeat the previous step until you have a total of four pieces.

step 07. Place your first folded piece on one side of the patterned square as shown above. (Folded edges should be facing inwards)

step 08. Place the second piece next to the first. Then place the third folded piece on top of the first two, lining it up on one side.

step 09 – 10. Lift one side of the purple piece and place the third piece inside. Then drop the purple piece on top.

step 11. This is how it should have looked so far.

step 12-13. Place the last folded piece in the bottom corner. Next, lift the brown piece of fabric up and then place one side of the white piece under it.

step 14. Arrange and place the upper parts.

step 15. It should look like this.

step 16. Pin the fabric together to hold it in place.

step 17. This is what the other side should look like.

step 18. Head to the sewing machine and sew all 4 sides together.

step 19 – 20. After sewing, open the top layers in the center and fold the fabric to the other side.

step 21-23. Repeat for each corner and then use a sharp tool to open each corner through the gap in the middle of the pad.

step 24. Adjust the front layers.

26. Here is the reverse side of the coaster.

27. Go ahead and give the pad a quick press with the iron. The gap should close after you smooth it out.

28. Finally, topstitch the backing and you’re done.

Final thoughts

These patchwork folded pads were super easy to sew, weren’t they? I love how they turned out and have already made a few. This is a little project you can do and it’s a great way to use up scrap fabric.

These folded coasters are also suitable for individual display. He is so cute!
