Ecoflow Delta Pro Ultra X and Smart Home Panel 3 review

Over the past two decades, living on the rural-urban fringe outside of Nashville, Tennessee, I have encountered power outages that seem to increase in both frequency and duration each year. Our aging grid and the intensity of recent storms led me to add a pair of traditional portables generator For our family’s power-outage preparedness plan several years ago. Geniuses get the job done, but they are plagued with issues and annoyances that I dread when managing power outages.

Upgrade our home with Ecoflow Delta Pro Ultra X battery system and Smart Home Panel 3 The three power outages (no joke) we’ve experienced in the two months since installing the EcoFlow system has been a game-changer for our family.

Safety first

Our first thought when considering this system was safety. Although EcoFlow was kind enough to provide the system for review, adding both the Smart Home Panel 3 and the Delta Pro Ultra X to our home was a big decision for my wife and I. Putting a serious battery stack in our house alone was cause for research and questions.

Not to spoil anything, but I wouldn’t be writing this if we were unsatisfied with EcoFlow’s security specs and features. The system uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, known for long cycle life and thermal stability. This is an EV-grade full-tab cell coupled with a multi-layer safety architecture that includes power protection, connection monitoring, load isolation and 24/7 Battery Management System (BMS) supervision. There is also built-in self-heating for low temperatures and protection for high-temperature charging.

The EcoFlow Whole Home Backup System has more out-of-the-box security protection than anything else in our home.

Installation

I contacted a company certified by EcoFlow to install these systems and, after they kindly and tirelessly answered my questions, I scheduled an installer to come in mid-December. The integration process was easy and fast. When my technician, Kerwin, showed up at the scheduled 7am to do the installation, the temperature was 12 degrees with little predicted rise throughout the day.

You should know that my breaker box is located in my garage on a cinder block wall, next to the non-insulated garage door. I still feel terrible for what Kerwin and his assistant went through as I write this. They worked next to that half-open garage door until 4:30 the next morning, when they finally restored power to my house after more than 21 hours. It was 8 degrees outside when they drove away and, I believe, made a pact never to speak of the experience again.

Through chattering teeth and exhaustion, Kerwin apologized and reiterated that a typical Smart Home Panel 3 installation like mine usually takes less than a work day. I have asked EcoFlow’s team and independently called two other electricians certified by EcoFlow that my case was an extreme outlier and many Smart Home Panel 3 and Delta Pro Ultra X installs take less than 4 hours.

Setup and application features

Kerwin used my old breaker box as a patch panel and installed an Ecoflow Smart Home Panel 3 next to it. This Delta Pro Ultra X The inverter and its two batteries stack easily on casters and plug directly into one of the three dedicated ports on the bottom of the Smart Home Panel 3. Setting up the app, while static on my core, was intuitive, easy and immediately impressive. Expect to let the EcoFlow system components use your phone’s (or a neighbor’s) Wi-Fi hotspot and then update for a few minutes before they start powering your home.

Once everything is updated and connected, the technology packed into this system really starts to shine. The app instantly details how much wattage each of my home’s 32 circuits is using and how much energy the backup system is using to charge or output as power. I have full control over my home circuit from the app itself, which operates a physical disconnect that I can hear clicking in and out. Smart Home Panel 3. I can also set certain circuits as essential and mark others as “good” when grid power is out, then set a threshold for the system to make that decision at a certain battery capacity, which can increase backup time by up to 42 percent.

As impressive and straightforward as it is to play with all these features while standing in my home, their real power is giving me complete remote control over my home’s power and battery backup system, no matter where I am.

Mode of use time

There’s one more feature I was excited about, but recently learned I can’t use in my area. My electric service provider has a flat rate for usage regardless of time of day. In areas where peak usage rates differ from off-peak (usually overnight) rates, the EcoFlow Smart Home Panel 3 and Delta Pro Ultra X combo can start paying for itself immediately.

EcoFlow’s AI-powered time-of-use (TOU) mode can also look at peak and off-peak rates, solar forecasts, and your usage patterns to charge and discharge the Delta Pro Ultra X battery in the most cost-effective way. I’m happy to have energy rates thanks to the Tennessee Valley Authority, but I’m also disappointed that I can’t properly test or take advantage of this feature.

Exhibit: Outage No.1

The first time we lost grid power and the EcoFlow setup took over powering my home, I was in Las Vegas and my wife and two kids were home. None of us had any idea the system had been taken over until a neighbor called to ask why the rest of the community was out with our house lights on. A freak Verizon outage prevented me from receiving notifications from the EcoFlow app indicating that the backup system had taken over.

I didn’t install the app on my wife’s phone at the time, and the power transfer was so instant and seamless that it didn’t even reset the clocks on our microwave or range. EcoFlow’s specifications say the transfer happens in 20 milliseconds, and I have no reason to argue. When grid power was restored an hour and a half later, the transfer back to the grid was just as quick and noticeable. This Ecoflow Smart Home Panel 3 Started recharging immediately Delta Pro Ultra X To be prepared for the next outage, whether in a few minutes or a few weeks.

Exhibit: Outage No. 2—The Ice Storm

A few weeks later, the middle Tennessee area was hit with a once-in-a-generation snowstorm. The storm, coupled with poor vegetation management, left many homes in the region without power for more than a week. Our home was one of thousands affected. At first, I expected (or at least hoped) our outage wouldn’t last more than a day, as we had expected.

While we saved some energy, I felt it was important to let the EcoFlow system keep us comfortable as I was doing research for my review. It did just that for over 15 hours, and it was fun, if a little guilt-inducing every time I looked out my windows at my dark street.

The four days without power after the EcoFlow system ran out of juice were some of the most uncomfortable I’ve spent in my home. We had to revert to our traditional generators and extension cords, fuel management and the usual hassles that come with them. With reports and text messages from neighbors detailing frozen and burst pipes in basements, I was thankful we had 15 hours of heat during the coldest parts of the storm. The Ecoflo Delta Pro Ultra X is responsible for preventing our home from suffering the same fate as all but three of our neighbors.

System expansion

Four days was enough time to research ways to ensure that my family would never again suffer such inconvenience due to prolonged power outages. Ecoflow Smart Home Panel 3 And the Delta Pro Ultra X is the cornerstone of our emergency power strategy moving forward.

I ordered an Ecoflow AC charging cable as a short-term solution to use our gas inverter generator to recharge the Delta Pro Ultra X battery array, and for a more permanent fix I have an Ecoflow Flowmaster generator rectifier. The rectifier will allow me to use my full beast of an 11,000-watt conventional gasoline generator to safely recharge the Delta Pro Ultra X batteries while they simultaneously discharge to power my home — a plug-and-play way to turn AC into almost any portable gasoline (STUK1W DC). Input for the Delta Pro Ultra X, without worrying about dirty generator power.

Adding solar panels to our roof is also a consideration as the EcoFlow system has been designed for that, allowing up to 10kW of solar input across two high-power PV ports. Adding more batteries to the Delta Pro Ultra X is also on the table, as the system can scale up to 180kWh of storage and 36kW of output expansion. There are many options for developing our system, but regardless of the final configuration we choose, I am confident and determined that I will never again worry about frozen pipes or endure another sleepless, miserable night.

Exhibit: Outage number 3

Our third outage came two weeks after another snow storm and lasted just under 5 hours. The EcoFlow app alerted me right before I was about to go to bed, and my next-door neighbors (different from the Vegas outage) texted to ask why our house only had street lights on. I quickly explained that we had one Ecoflow backup systemAnd they promised to show it to me the next day. I agreed and then slept like a log, knowing that our Delta Pro Ultra X would keep my family comfortable for at least 15 hours.

By morning the power was back on, and by noon, I was showing off the EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra X and Smart Home Panel 3 to my neighbors, animatedly recounting the stories of three recent outages and our experiences. I showed them the app and its features and turned the circuit off and on to demonstrate how easy and really fun it is to use. It was impressive to see how much energy simple things like my gaming computer and heat pump were using. We talked enthusiastically about solar and explored options to power the Delta Pro Ultra X in other ways. Simply put, they sold out.

judgment

After going through three very different outages with this setup, here’s what really stuck with me. First, the way the system switches is so fast and so seamless that the home simply doesn’t react the way you’re used to during a blackout. No flicker, no blinking clocks, no mad dashes. Second, the combination of the Smart Home Panel 3 and the Delta Pro Ultra X isn’t just a bigger battery. It’s a complete smart whole-home system that can monitor and control every circuit, automatically shade non-essentials, pull in solar, coordinate with generators, and even try to play with your utility bills if you set it up.

Most importantly, these storms change what it feels like for my family. Instead of standing in the dark wondering how long the pipes will last, I find myself checking an app, maybe tweaking a few circuits, and then going back to playing a board game, reading a book, or whatever we were doing. The outages haven’t gone away, but the stress and anxiety surrounding them has almost completely disappeared.
