Want storage that helps organize a room without adding another plastic bin or bulky basket? Many entryway organizers solve clutter but create a different problem. Hard containers, sharp corners, and heavy materials can make small spaces feel crowded instead of calming.
This project by DIY enthusiast Chelsea Mohrman started with thick rope from the hardware store.
After winding the rope into continuous coils, shaping the walls upwards, and adding a paint-dipped finish to the bottom, the material stopped looking like construction rope and began to behave like textured decor. The basket softened the entryway, added storage without visual heaviness, and turned everyday clutter into a part of the room that needed to be hidden.
A coil of rope has the shape of an already woven basket
The reason this works comes down to composition and proportion.
As the rope was wrapped in tight circles, the layers began to resemble the natural-fiber baskets used in farmhouse, coastal, and modern organic interiors. Once the base is wide enough to stand upright, the upper rows form a gentler curve than most storage bins or square baskets.
The shape remained open and rounded, which helped the basket blend into the room rather than acting like a hard storage block near a wall or door.
A paint-dipped finish changed the whole thing
Before the paint, the rope looked rough and unfinished.
After taping the top and sprinkling the bottom half, the basket began to read more like decor than utility collection. A dark painted base visually grounds the shape, while the natural rope color on top maintains warmth and texture across the surface.
That contrast is what made the basket feel deliberate rather than improvised.
Soft texture replaced the entry way
Most storage containers add visual weight because the surfaces remain solid and flat.
This basket did the opposite.
The rope texture breaks up the light and shadow across the surface, making the entryway feel softer and less harsh. A basket filled with shoes, blankets, mail, or small everyday items still behaves more like a decor piece than a storage container.
Once he walked into the room it became the biggest difference.
It solves the problem of very small spaces
Entryways collect clutter quickly but don’t always handle large collections well.
Plastic bins, cube organizers and hard baskets can make narrow spaces feel cramped as the structure becomes a wall or other solid object next to a door. This basket avoids that as the wrapped rope keeps the shape lighter and more relaxed.
