With advertising from Google Screenless Fitbit AirThe company is also gearing up for major changes in how the app works and what device features it supports. That means we’re missing out on sleeping animals and a bunch of other features you might miss. Here’s what’s on the chopping block.
Fitbit accounts are going away (for real this time)
Fitbit was its own company, but after Google Bought a FitbitIt began gently encouraging users to use Google accounts instead of using their old Fitbit accounts. While the incentive has become less gentle over time, Google has been saying more loudly over the past year that you need To switch your old Fitbit account to Google One, For real, we mean it.
The switch deadline kept getting pushed back, but it looks like Google really means it this time. Social features in the Fitbit app will be locked on May 12, 2026 for people using a Fitbit account. then May 19, 2026Your Fitbit account will stop working. Google will start deleting your Fitbit data on July 15, 2026. we have Instructions for transferring your Fitbit account to a Google Account here.
Old Fitbit forums are being removed (along with your post history and profile data)
If you use the Fitbit forum (which has been around since 2013), you’ll lose data there too. Buried in a chipper Advertisement Regarding the forum overhaul (“We can’t wait for you to see the updated community!”), Google says you’ll lose your post history and all profile data from the forum. Fitbit users often refer to these posts for information on older devices that are not currently supported. It is unclear from the announcement whether past posts will still exist in the archive.
No more badges or sleeping animals
You will no longer be able to earn badges. No new badges will be created and all old badges will be deleted. “If you have a Google Health Coach, your coach will help you celebrate your progress and achievements,” says Google. Sleeping animals are going away, as well, more on that below. (For what it’s worth, Samsung still makes animals sleep, as I noted when I Galaxy Ring reviewed.)
What do you think so far?
Many social amenities are being removed
In addition to forums, the Fitbit app also has social features. Also changing are:
-
Social profiles Your Google Account will include your name, email, and profile picture. When you first log in with a Google Account, you’ll get a prompt asking you to allow this information to be shared. You cannot have a custom name or picture unless you change it on your Google Account.
-
Privacy settings No longer available for social profiles, as social profiles will no longer include your gender, height, weight, location or friends list.
-
groups And Community feed going away
-
Direct messages No longer available in the Fitbit app.
-
Child accounts Can’t be friends.
These health facilities are disappearing or changing
When the old Fitbit app is replaced with Google Health, some old features won’t make the jump. If you’re using the public preview, you may have noticed that these features aren’t there. While Google Health will add some missing features, Here is a list The changes Google plans to make. I’ll include what, if anything, replaces each missing or changed feature.
-
Cardio Fitness No more estimation based on your height and weight. This feature is now called VO2max and requires GPS data from outdoor runs. (A nice perk: It can use data from other devices, not just Fitbits.)
-
Sleep profiles Moving away, including sleeping animals. Instead, you can ask Google Health Coach what kind of sleeper you are.
-
Estimated Oxygen Variation (EOV) is being removed, but you can still check your blood oxygen (SpO2) in the Health tab.
-
Snoring checks are going away. This was a feature on the original Sense and Versa 3.
-
Stress check graphs No longer available. You can still scan on Charge 5, Charge 6 and Sense to see individual results.
-
Minute-by-minute skin temperature No longer available. You can still get daily and weekly skin temperatures.
-
Blood glucose tracking It won’t let you add symptoms or get reminders to check your levels, but you can connect Apple Health (iOS) or Health Connect (Android) to get blood glucose data that way.
-
Food plans No longer supported with calorie targets, but you can still set calorie targets and macronutrient targets in the Nutrition section of the Health tab.
-
Recipes are no longer available. This was a premium feature.
-
Lifescan devices Connection to the Fitbit app is no longer supported. You can still log your blood glucose manually.
In many cases, missing features are replaced by a suggestion that you can ask Google Health Coach about that area of your health. Since Google Health Coach is a premium feature, it means you will need to pay for that answer And You’ll find it in a less structured format that may be contaminated with hallucinations. This doesn’t sound like an upgrade to me! But Google hopes the new app’s extra features will more than make up for what’s missing.
