Step 3: Excavate the area under each walkway stone you plan to set.
Use it wheelbarrow Or a garden cart to carry natural flagstones or man-made garden pavers to each stake. Remove the stakes and center a stone or paver over each spot. Using a long utility knife or garden trowel, carve a line around the perimeter of the stone. Remove the stone and dig out a layer of sod, removing the soil so that the hole is about an inch deeper than the depth of the stone. Make the bottom of the hole as flat as possible.
Step 4: Add crushed stone or coarse sand to the excavated areas.
Pour a 1/4- to 1/2-inch layer of crushed limestone or coarse sand into the bottom of the hole, packing it down and making it as flat and level as possible. Use a level to see that the bottom is flat and level. If you are using coarse sand, you can wet it with a fine spray of water to help it pack tightly. This layer will prevent the stone from sinking over time.
