Most cat scratchers take over the room. Big carpet towers, huge shapes and textures that never really fit with anything else in the house. I didn’t want that. I just wanted something simple that my cats would use, without adding another object that would look out of place.
So, I tried this. Two pieces of leftover wood and a length of rope. It was enough to create a small angular scratcher that sits low, stands still and blends in with the rest of the space.
The idea is simple. One board becomes the scratching surface, the other supports it at an angle.
How does this scratcher work?
I kept the structure to a minimum. A long plank leans against a small base piece, creating a stable slope that cats naturally gravitate towards.
Setup includes:
- A main board for scratching
- A base part that holds an angle
- Wrap the rope tightly to create texture
Who is more important than anything. It gives the cats better traction and prevents the part from sliding during use.
Easy build process
I used basic materials and kept the steps straight.
- Cut the wood – I made a long piece for the scratching surface and a short piece for the support. The exact size depends on your space.
- Shape the corners – I adjusted the cuts so that the two pieces are flush when joined. Once they fit, I smoothed the edges.
- Paint the board – I added color to both pieces to make them feel more intentional. If you prefer a natural look, you can leave the wood raw.
- Wrap the rope – I fixed one end of the rope to the back, then wrapped it tightly across the surface. I added glue to the front to keep everything in place.
- Secure the structure – I clamped the two pieces together so the board stays at a fixed angle. Once set, the piece felt solid and ready for use.
What I saw after using it
My cats took to him immediately. The incline makes them easy to pull, and the rope holds up well under everyday use.
It stays in one place, doesn’t take up much space and doesn’t look like a typical pet product.
It solves one problem and that is enough
I don’t need a full cat tree or a big setup. Just a place where they can scratch, stretch and leave everything else alone.
