Sherlock Holmes is the same recently in the public domain (at least in full), and whoa boy, are the producers going to make the most of it—there are at least three major Doyle-related works streaming in 2026, and I’m probably missing a couple. As evidenced by the hundreds of films, books, porn parodies, etc. released in the century since Arthur Conan Doyle’s death, IP was never a hindrance. Which is to say that Holmes is very resilient as a character, and, while I wouldn’t have said we needed Zippy, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock prequel-Young Sherlock Unique, and very fun. It’s stretching the character almost to its breaking point, to be sure, but at least maintaining a reasonable respect for the canon, with Donal Finn as Moriarty playing the hero Phineas Tiffin well.
Here are some other fun stylish period (mostly) dramas for your post-Young Sherlock A pleasure to watch.
This artistic trickster (2023)
An artistic trickster serves as a sequel to Oliver TwistJack Dawkins (Thomas Brodie-Sangster of The Queen’s Gambit And Wolf Hall) has made a life for himself as a prison escapee surgeon: turns out those nimble fingers are good for more than just picking pockets. All is going well until his old mentor Fagin (David Thewellis) shows up on his doorstep, using their history to lure Jack back to help with criminal endeavours. Thewlis and Brody-Sangster are well matched in a surprising and funny series that sees Jack torn between his evil impulses and his desire to go straight. flow This artistic trickster Hulu is.
Irregular (2021)
Sounds like a highly unnecessary Sherlock Holmes pastiche involving Baker Street Irregulars bad sisters’ Thadiya Graham) layered an unexpected exploration of grief in a dark supernatural mystery at its core. Here, Watson (Royce Pierson) hires the damaged but resourceful urchin to help with cases involving clandestine activity, as well as to help track down the aging and missing Sherlock. Holmes’ angle aside, the show serves as a much darker, Victorian era Stranger Things. It was canceled before its time, but comes to a reasonably satisfying conclusion. flow Irregular On Netflix.
Murdoch secrets (2008 – )
Set in 1895, the show follows Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) of the Toronto Constabulary as he and his team solve some of Upper Canada’s most shocking crimes. The chemistry between the leads has carried the show through 19 seasons (and counting), as has the show’s whimsical attitude toward historical accuracy, throwing real-life figures and innovations into a mix that includes technology that borders on steampunk. A little cozier, perhaps, than Young SherlockBut sometimes it’s the perfect vibe. flow Murdoch secrets on Tubby.
A thousand blows (2025 – )
A spiritual follow-up to Peaky Blinders From the show’s creator, it goes back a bit to the 1880s, during which an all-female crime syndicate is running the East End of London. True story! Erin Doherty stars as Mary Carr, leader of the Forty Elephants crew, specializing in shoplifting and confidence schemes. in A thousand blowsMary and her gang come up against Stephen Graham’s Henry “Sugar” Goodson (another real-world antihero), who runs an illegal bare-knuckle boxing organization. Among them comes Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby), a recently arrived Jamaican immigrant who introduces us to this grim world and its competing factions. flow A thousand blows Hulu is.
Vienna Blood (2019 – 2024)
Vienna Blood Producer and writer Steve Thompson was the screenwriter for Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock Series, as well Young Sherlock The series is questionable, so it probably makes perfect sense that this Edwardian-era crime procedural has Holmes in its DNA. Matthew Beard plays Dr. Max Lieberman, a student of Sigmund Freud, previously recruited by police detective Oskar Reinhardt (Jürgen Maurer) to provide some psychological insight into the investigation of several gruesome murders. Lieberman makes brilliant deductions about character traits just as Holmes does with physical evidence, with a little more action and serial murder. flow Vienna Blood On PBS Passport or buy from him Prime Video.
Death Comes to Pemberley (2013)
This is not a sexy, action-packed update Pride and PrejudiceBut the source puts a little spin on the genre Young Sherlock does Adapted from the novel by PD James, one of the most accomplished crime novelists of the 20th century, Pemberley Austen finds us many years after the events of the novel. Darcy (Matthew Rhys) and Lizzie (Anna Maxwell Martin) are happily, if not always happily, married, and arrange one of the balls Pemberley is famous for. On the way there, Lizzie’s sister and her husband George Wickham are traveling with Captain Danny. Wickham and Danny have a fight, disappear into the woods and Danny dies. Perry Mason (2020 – 2022)
As for Matthew Rhys, it’s this addictively quirky duck of a show that takes the Perry Masons of print, film and television and places him in a dark and gritty Depression-era prequel. Rhys is fabulous, naturally, as a brilliant but hard-living defense lawyer, still going through a divorce while dealing with the trauma of the Great War. He is hired to investigate the case of a kidnapped and deformed child in 1932 LA with ties to crooked cops, local business leaders and politicians. Juliet Rylance co-stars as no-nonsense legal secretary Della Street and Tatiana Maslany as a quirky preacher. flow Perry Mason on HBO Max.
Mr. Spade (2024)
Scott Frank’s original play (The Queen’s Gambit) and Tom Fontana (Homicide, Oz), Mr. Spade Hammett’s Sam finds Spade The Maltese Falcon Khyati lives a quiet life in retirement in the south of France. All is going well for the troubled ex-detective – until six nuns are brutally murdered in a nearby convent, the same convent that was briefly home to Sam’s ward. Naturally, he finds his past has caught up with him, and is forced to surrender his beautiful life to help uncover a complex mystery that threatens his (very few) loved ones. Clive Owen is great as the bombastic, emphysemic detective and the story feels like a worthy sequel to the original novel. flow Mr. Spade on Prime Video and AMC+.
Gentleman (2024 – )
Theo James plays an army officer and Eddie Horniman (a name that is mentioned as often as possible), the heir to the Horniman estate (there he is again) who, after his father’s death, is known as the Duke of Halstead. He discovers that the father was involved in various criminal enterprises, and that his brother owes millions of pounds to a drug dealer. What else is a military-trained duke to do but learn to navigate a violent underworld while appearing calm? flow Gentleman On Netflix.
Sherlock and Daughter (2025 – )
Even if the setup is lifted from anything in the Doyle canon, this CW production offers perhaps the most accurate Holmes yet, in the form of David Thewellis. He is broody, impersonal, and emotionally distant, which makes for an even more effective contrast when Amelia Rojas (Blue Hunt) shows up at his homestead after his mother’s death and a harrowing trip to California. With the very real possibility that Sherlock is her father, she teams up with him to investigate an international criminal cartel and, hopefully, find out what happened to her mother. The clever Amelia quickly replaces the missing Watson, though the show doesn’t shy away from the challenges a Native American girl faces in Victorian London. flow Sherlock and Daughter on HBO Max.
