ok guys

Do you want to come along on a small planning trip?

Ever wondered how I plan a room?

where do i start

Where do I get my inspiration from?

Where does it all begin?

Do I ever make mistakes along the way?

I literally laughed out loud when I read the last statement I typed. I am the queen of mistakes. The secret to making mistakes? You don’t let them define you. You don’t let them be anything more than minor speedbumps throughout the design process.

And most importantly? Don’t let them stop you from designing.

Here is our room. Here’s where we’re starting. A few things to note about this space.

  • This Rome is decorated for autumn (This is the last picture I have of this place)
  • It looks very similar except for the pumpkin
  • I need to replace this mattress (I love it, but it has a lot of blemishes that you can’t see)
  • I’m going with the grandmacore theme (Except for some more vintage items like Cottagecore)
  • I mocked up the space with various items and I’ll walk you through the process

are you ready

Let’s decorate.A rectangular area rug with an intricate, repeating damask pattern in shades of blue on a white background creates an elegant and symmetrical design.

// Blue and white lattice rug //

This is the mattress I got to start with.

Isn’t it beautiful? I loved the layers of blues and the diamond trellis pattern is classic.

you The mattress can be seen here.

Let’s see how it looks in the room.

Bright, airy bedroom with white furniture, blue and white patterned rugs, white upholstered bed and large windows with beige curtains. A small bench sits at the foot of the bed.

A quick note. This room has a super odd layout (it’s L-shaped). I have tried different rug placements and sizes and 8′ x 10″ works best in this space. A room looks better with a large central rug like this one. I’ve tried 9′ x 12′ before, but it took up too much space and looked awkward. This is just to say that sometimes you have to experiment with what is right for the room.

And then let the room speak to you.

I liked the rug, but I was concerned that the blue was too soft and didn’t have enough definition.

So I decided to make fun of it with a curtain.

Blue and white checkered curtains hang on silver rods in front of the window, through which the sunlight shines. The room has light colored walls, a wooden table and a small cabinet with a white flower arrangement.

// Gingham curtains //

I was leaning towards these curtains.

An oversized gingham check would be perfect on the windows to help balance the rug.

you See the curtains here (they come in tons of different colors).

Let’s see how they look in a room with pillows.

A bright bedroom with white furniture, a blue-white floral rug, a bed with white bedding, a white chair on the vanity, blue gingham curtains and wooden floors. Natural light fills the room.

Umm.

No.

Just no.

WAAAAAY too much contrast.

So I tried another curtain option.

White curtains with vertical blue stripes hang on rods in front of the large window, letting in natural light. The room has light-colored walls and wooden floors, with a plant partially visible on the right.

// Blue and white striped curtains //

A good basic blue and white stripe.

The stripe looks like a spot, but it’s bolder, and there’s more white between the stripes.

you These screens can be seen here.

Let’s look at new curtain and rug combinations.

Bright bedroom with white furniture, white bed, blue and white patterned rug, dark wood floor and large windows with blue and white striped curtains. Decorations include a vanity with wreaths, baskets and chairs.

the better

But then I decided that I really didn’t like the mattress anymore ((See what I mean about being wrong.).

sigh

It was starting to look a lot like my bedroom from high school (which is probably back in style now). I wanted a stone with a bit more gray (to help ground it with the floor) and a bit more pattern.

So I got this mattress.

An ornate area rug with an intricate floral and geometric pattern in shades of blue and cream, featuring a large central medallion and detailed border design.

// Gray and blue rug //

I love this rug.

The details are so beautiful and there is so much definition and pattern.

Also, I really love a rug with a center pattern like this one.

you This rug can be seen here.

Let’s see how this rug looks in space.

A bright bedroom with white furniture, sheer curtains, dark wooden floors and a large white and blue patterned rug. Artwork and decorative items are displayed on dressers and walls, creating a warm, elegant atmosphere.

ok

Now we are getting somewhere.

This is what I wanted in my mind to look like.

Have you ever had that happen? Where you can see the room, but you don’t know how to get there?

Come sit with me.

Now I needed artwork and accessories and look what I got.

Two framed botanical art prints featuring watercolor-style illustrations of blue and beige flowers with leaves, set against a white background and surrounded by light wooden frames.

// Blue and white artwork //

Isn’t this so beautiful?

They are part of the new My Texas House drop for spring.

you The artwork can be seen here.

Now let’s see how they look in space.

A bright, airy bedroom with white furniture, a large bed, light blue and white patterned pillows, wall art depicting flowers, and large windows with curtains that let in natural light.

love

love

love

seriously.

I love how it all comes together.

Table lamp with gold base and tall, cylindrical white glass shade. A clear electrical cord with a switch is visible, wrapped around the side of the lamp. The lamp has a vintage, elegant design.

// Milk glass lamp //

Then I found the perfect grandmacore accessory – this little milk glass lamp that I’m going to add to the side table, and the room started to come together.

you This milk glass lamp can be seen here.

I found block print bedding and pillows and hydrangeas.

A collage of blue and white bedroom decor, with patterned pillows, a quilt, framed floral art, a striped curtain, a vase of white hydrangea, an ornate area rug, and a lamp with a textured base and white shade.

// The design scheme //

Here’s what I’m thinking of for bedding and some new accessories.

Then I’ll go vintage shopping (both my house, my mom’s house and downtown McKinney Square) for some truly authentic pieces.

Bright, airy bedroom with white furniture including bed, desk, chair and dresser. Large windows with curtains let in natural light. A patterned beige rug covers the dark wood floors; Wall decor and plants add warmth.

Another look at our design journey.

Of these.

A bright, airy bedroom with white furniture, a large bed, light blue and white patterned pillows, wall art depicting flowers, and large windows with curtains that let in natural light.

For this (minus the spider web on the mirror).

Wasn’t this fun?

If you ever have a mattress that you need help with? Nice to try putting it in your space.

Stay tuned.

I plan to pull this room together over the next couple of weeks.

There is hope.

But sometimes I am wrong. remember? 🙂
