I have been trying to collect brown transfer software for the past few years.
It was hunting.
I scoured yard sales and estate sales and thrift stores and my mom’s closets.
But with all that hunting? This is my entire collection.

Who knew brown transfer software was such a challenge? Blue and white transfer software? That’s easy. It’s everywhere.
But I had pretty much given up on the whole brown transferer thing.

i know right I guess the Pioneer Woman heard my pleas and created this brown transfer kit just for me. The set comes with four bowls, four plates and four salad plates.
It arrived yesterday and I knew I wanted to use it to transform the hutch into the family room for spring.
Just in case you’re wondering, this isn’t Extreme Makeover: The Hutch Edition.
No laser wrinkle removal.
No hair extensions.
Nothing drastic.
This is just a mini refresh.
Here are 7 simple tips I used to decorate this hutch.
7 simple steps to styling Hutch
1. Take everything off the shelves

I understand it
It sounds counterintuitive.
But sometimes it’s really hard to see the forest for the trees. You need a blank slate to help you figure it out. So let’s start our cottage style by pulling everything off the shelves. Then step back and take a good look at this hut.
Isn’t it so cute?
Pat your shack on the back.
It’s about to get even sweeter.
2. Replace your hardware
This is one of the simplest things you can do to make your cabin even cuter.
Hobby Lobby and Anthropologie are two of my favorite places to find hardware that is unusual, fun, creative, and inexpensive.
When in doubt about the hardware?
I usually stay neutral like these crystal buttons.
3. Add height
This is the first step I take when styling a cabin.
It’s just common sense.
If you line the shelves of your hutch with bowls and stacked plates and never add anything to the back of the hutch, it will look empty. This hutch is a little challenging because the back of the bottom shelf is so tall.
I took all of this beautiful brown transfer and added it to the back of the basket
Here are some simple tips for adding height to your hutch:
- plate holders
- just add plate holders to the back of your plates and hang them on the basket
- add large plates to the back of the hutch
- add two plates (one bigger and one smaller plate) to give less height to the plates
4. Arrange it
Don’t just think of the back of the hutch for height.
Consider height with what you add to the shelves.
I add stacks of plates and stacks of bowls. The stack makes it easy to place everything at the right height.
5. Keep it weird
When placing things in your hut, you want to add things in odd numbers.
Some people call this the rule of threes.
(general aside: but really-between-us? Why stop at three?)
I’m not too sure why, but odd numbers just make everything look better. Add three bowls on this side and five plates on that side and add pitchers in groups of three.
6. Add an organic element
When decorating the cabin, I shop the yard (or sometimes the fridge).
I added this tree to the hut to give it some greenery. I’m also thinking (after looking at all these pictures) that I might add little sprigs of greenery in some of the jugs on the shelves to make it feel more like spring.
Here are some of my favorite ways to add organic elements:
- add a vase full of branches with green leaves
- a bowl full of apples
- fill urns with fresh flowers from every season
- layer in lemons in a decorative dish
You get the idea. The next time you go to the grocery store, add a bag of apples, oranges, lemons, or limes, and when you get home, put them in a bowl.
Your home will thank you.

7. Evaluate before and after
Can you believe how cute the brown transfer software looks on the shelves?
When you’re decorating the hutch, don’t forget to step back and see how far you’ve come with your decorating.
As you decorate, don’t lose sight of the forest for the trees.
Constantly evaluate the entire style of the hut, not each shelf.

They made me appreciate this set so much more.
