We’re counting down the last few days of school here, which means summer is really close. Although we are still waiting for our summer weather, the last few days have been nice and the sun is definitely a balm for the soul during this busy time of year. Although I’m usually excited to add some summer living room decor, this year I wanted to keep things the same as they were in the spring, but I made one big change; A new feature color for summer; Terracotta Well, I’m right there are a few versions of that terracotta tone, some more peachy than any, but overall it looks fresh and bright for the upcoming season. I love the warmth it adds to our space!

How to decorate your living room for summer:
1) Use a summer-inspired color scheme or add pops of summer color
As I mentioned, I decided to bring in some peachy and terracotta tones for this summer season, and these compliment the greens and dark teals I already had running in our living/dining/kitchen great room. This image gives you a good idea of the plan I was going for.
I think we all crave a bit of sun-baked desert in our homes after a very cold and wet spring.
2) Vases and greenery or flowers
As I’ve mentioned on my last few trips, I’ve gotten away with buying tons of new outfits for each season. Instead I shop around the house and reuse what I have, mix in some fresh greenery or flowers, and make something new from a thrift store or dollar store.

To change my vases for the season, I filled them with greenery that I already had. I’ve mentioned before that I like to collect good quality flowers and greenery and store them in totes when I’m not using them. That way I have a selection of things to change out to give our home a new look each season, without having to go out and buy new stuff all the time.
I shared Last week in this article our summer mantel decorations. It definitely goes with our summer color scheme. The green vase, below, has had a place on our mantel for several months. They easily switch from season to season with a few changes of greenery and flowers.
I also carried out this plan in our rugs (some of which are similar I shared in my spring tour), and in hydrangeas (Fox) that I displayed on our coffee table. The green/blue hydrangeas were Michael’s purchases several years ago, and the terracotta tone was actually a Walmart find this past spring. I love how the flowers are strong and tie in with the color scheme created by the fabrics in this room. Repeating elements like color brings balance and unity to your home.
3) Terracotta
There is something about terracotta that always looks so beautiful. I especially love aged terracotta these days. It’s really quick and easy to give terracotta pots and vases you already have a vintage finish with a little paint! 4) Fresh mattresses and linens
Switching up your rugs and fabrics is always really refreshing and instantly makes a huge difference to your space. I added two new light clay lumbar pillows (from Urban Barn) on our accent chairs, along with crisp terracotta linen style pillows on our sofa (find Homesense). Once again, the repetition of this warm color helps create a sense of unity in the space. These colors are also present in our large area rugs. It’s the Loloi Rug – Hathaway Multi/Ivory.
My favorite pillow might actually be the long lumbar pillow featured on it Our Cleo Rattan SofaHowever, because it accentuates all the colors I love for our summer living room decor.
5) Include lots of natural textures
Natural textures scream summer to me, as they are often present in all parts of coastal design. Wicker, jute, rattan, wood, driftwood, all create a feel that reminds us of beach days and sunshine.
6) Summer Inspired Artwork – Free Printable Summer Art
I added a new piece to our frame TV (available via Etsy here ), but also a new printable for the vignette above our bookcase. I will be adding this summer watercolor landscape to my free printable library (which is available to all my email subscribers) really soon.
