A big disadvantage is that some foods that you display out in the open, rather than in containers, will ripen very quickly.
“Berries are probably at the top of that list, so you need to prioritize them and eat them quickly. It’s definitely more time-consuming than throwing food in the refrigerator when you get home from the grocery store,” says Linzi.
“Setting up and maintaining a FridgeScape refrigerator requires time and regular maintenance, which may not be practical for everyone,” agrees Janice.
As well, Linzi says it can be a bit inconvenient depending on how you design the refrigerator, which means you may have to move things around to get to something else.
“I also think that someone who doesn’t really eat all their produce might have more food waste,” she adds.

Want to try this at home? These are Lindsey’s top tips for fridgescaping:
- Take it slow: “Start slowly by using things you can use anyway. For example, most people will keep their butter or eggs in the refrigerator anyway, so a nice butter dish and egg crate are a good start.”
- Meal Plan: “I recommend making a meal plan before shopping so you have a good idea of what you have and don’t overbuy just to make your refrigerator look pretty.”
- Choose the right container: “Not all containers that look like they might work for fridgescaping are suitable for it food storage. Testing is important if you are using an older antique piece. You don’t want to give yourself lead poisoning because you left the asparagus in a vase for two weeks. Or, if you’re buying something online, it should state in the manufacturing notes if it’s not food safe.”
- Place items carefully: “Things like apples are heavy ethylene producers and they ripen things quickly, and certain vegetables are very sensitive to ethylene, so you don’t want to put them next to each other.”
- Avoid cross-contamination: “You want to be careful about cross-contamination, such as not leaving meat out in the open or making sure you clean up spills right away.”
